A video that inspires me
”…as ever, your comments and kindness all about – you see and open up things
that are there but not noticed until you do and kindly welcome and evoke them in words.
You make such poems and possibilities of everyday moments, and of us.”
Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authentic cultural voice -- and warns that if we hear only a single story about another person or country, we risk a critical misunderstanding.

During a Live Write with Katey Schultz, I gave thought to what influences my writing (and coaching) that is reflected in my poetic memoir. Russian and Hungarian ancestral roots, resettlement, upheaval and celebration in my life, resilience seen through the rear-view mirror, blessings in disguise, mentorship, community, curiosity, mothering on the periphery seeking center, not of attention, but as a catalyst for understanding and outreach, and listening radically to different voices in intimate conversations first, come to mind.
